"Back in the day I was the original bass player and the spark that started The Stoves. In 1976 to '79 I was a student at Western and Fanshawe. At the same time I was involved in the scene in Detroit at Bookies Lounge. Anyway...I met up with Keith Whittaker one day in early '77 and we started sharing pints and swapping tales of music and life (bare with me cause the time line is kinda hazy).  But one day Keith offered my band in Detroit, "The Pop Tarts", an opening spot for a gig at the Polish Hall. Well 3 days before the gig I was informed that the Tarts were no more, so I tried to put something together, real speedy like, with some friends from Fanshawe in the MIA program. The line up was Rick Fenton on lead vocals, Dale Heslop (or was it Heslip?) on guitar who would go on to be a great video producer/director, Greg Moore on drums, and myself on bass. So we had two intense rehearsals where I tried to turn the other three into bonified punk rockers :)    Well...we hit the stage and started crankin', the vocalist had been drinking all afternoon because he was terrified, and he leaned back and said to me "Hey man, I forgot the words"...so I said let's go into another song. Now we're still playing and haven't missed a beat yet and then he turns around again and says "No man I forgot all the words to everything"...so in true punk tradition we just stopped and walked off the stage. I still laugh and cringe when I remember that!
A couple of days later Greg Moore asked me if we would ever play again and I said sure. I was in two of the Fanshawe MIA session bands with Rick Washbrook and Greg was part of one of them too. So one thing led to another and Rick brought in a friend from Toronto named Paul Scriven on second guitar. Both Rick and Paul were great guitar players. And one cold day while standing around a kitchen stove, with warm knives and beer, The Stoves became a band. Our sound and songs were more power pop than hardcore, sort of like XTC meets Talking Heads. We opened for the Demics a few times at the Cedar Lounge and The Schooner in St. Thomas, we played with the Regulators and Crash 80's there too. As well as Larry's Hide Away in Toronto, some place in downtown Ottawa which we filled the whole weekend and blah blah blah..."

quote: "As you can see from the article (shown at right) Chris, Jane, Marcy (on drums, she'd auditioned for the Demics...post Nick, pre Jimmy) and who the hell was singing I can't recall (Michael H) opened for the Demics at a party at Brian Hodder and Jan Chappell's loft on the 3rd floor on Talbot St. near the Blue Boot. They were fresh enough that they didn't even have a name for their band. Keith Whittaker introduced them in formal master of ceremonies manner - "Ladies and Gentlemen" - and called them Heaven Seventeen...a band from his favourite film - A Clockwork Orange.

The guys who wrote the article (shown at right) later said it was meant to be a joke article. There was some odd notion at the time that this was the 'punk' thing to do - I never figured that one out. They had actually liked the party! "

The bands listed below were born more out of "rock and roll that gelled with punk's sense of humour"...not quite as risque as punk, but just as much fun. Among the best (or coolest perhaps) of the bands in this "category", were Sci Phonics and Uranus. See Band Index for separate pages on these two bands.

The Wogs

1981

"We met and formed out of Fanshawe College- we were all in MIA & Fine Arts at the time. Colin Davison - vocals & guitar; Scott
Rose - vocals & guitar; Jim (mud) Moore - bass; Gord Walker - drums & vocals. We played together for about a year and a bit - our first gig was opening for Shakin' Jack & the Rattlesnake Jakes at the Cedar Lounge in 1981. Then we regularly played at the Embassy Hotel and some Fanshawe gigs and other assorted stuff.

I wrote a bunch of originals for the band which we recorded at Fanshawe - "Joe and Mary", "Terms of Affection" "Living in the Real World", "Where Did I Go Wrong", "TV Control", "Too Bad", "Brand New Shirt & Tie", and these tunes still exist on some cassette tapes. We also did a revved-up version of the Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love" a good year before Phil Collins decided to ruin it.

One good story: we were playing a Saturday all-day show at the Embassy (the Wall gig) with a bunch of other London bands, and Scott & Jim went home to pick-up a monitor amp. Suddenly Jim comes bursting in saying Scott's been arrested for some unpaid outstanding tickets. Guess he got pulled over for some minor traffic violation on the way home. Anyway we had to scrounge round the entire bar to raise the $50 to post his bail so we could get him out in time to play the gig. How's that for punk rock?

Anyway eventually the band splintered into three other bands: The Sensations (Colin & Gord); Drowned Hampster (Scott); and Random Killing (Jim)."
